PARENT QUESTION: Should I schedule an eye exam before or after the school year ends?

PARENT QUESTION: Can Diabetes Affect My Child’s Eyes?

by | Nov 3, 2026 | Blog

November is Diabetic Eye Disease Awareness Month, and while we often think of diabetes as an adult condition, it affects children, too. Both Type 1 diabetes (the most common form in children) and the growing incidence of Type 2 diabetes in youth can lead to serious eye complications if not properly managed.

What Is Diabetic Eye Disease?

Diabetic retinopathy is the most common diabetic eye condition. High blood sugar levels damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina—the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Over time, these damaged vessels can leak, swell, or close off entirely, leading to blurred vision or even blindness.

Can It Really Happen to Kids?

Yes. While diabetic retinopathy typically develops after years of uncontrolled blood sugar, children diagnosed with diabetes in early childhood can begin to show retinal changes during their teen years. The earlier diabetes is diagnosed and the longer it goes without consistent management, the greater the risk.

What Parents Should Know:

  • Annual dilated eye exams are recommended for children with diabetes, starting about five years after diagnosis (or at puberty, whichever comes first).
  • Blood sugar management is eye care. Keeping glucose levels stable is one of the best ways to protect your child’s vision.
  • Watch for symptoms. Blurry vision, floaters, or difficulty seeing at night should prompt an immediate eye appointment.
  • Work with your child’s care team. The pediatrician, endocrinologist, and eye doctor should all be communicating.

If your child has diabetes, protecting their eyes is a lifelong priority—and it starts with awareness. Schedule that annual eye exam and keep the conversation going.
