Amblyopia—commonly called “lazy eye”—is the most common cause of vision loss in children, affecting roughly 2–3% of kids. It occurs when one eye doesn’t develop normal visual connections with the brain, usually because of an imbalance between the eyes (such as one eye being much more nearsighted or farsighted than the other, or one eye being misaligned).
Why Is Timing Critical?
A child’s visual system is still developing during the first seven to eight years of life. During this window, the brain can be “retrained” to use the weaker eye through proper treatment. After this period, the brain’s visual pathways become much harder to change, and vision loss from amblyopia may become permanent.
What Does Treatment Look Like?
- Corrective lenses. Glasses are often the first step to balance the image each eye sends to the brain.
- Patching. Wearing a patch over the stronger eye forces the brain to rely on—and strengthen—the weaker eye.
- Atropine drops. These blur the stronger eye temporarily, achieving a similar effect to patching.
- In some cases, surgery. If misalignment (strabismus) is the underlying cause, surgical correction may be recommended.
What Can Parents Do?
The tricky part is that young children rarely complain about vision in one eye—they don’t know anything is wrong. That’s why comprehensive eye exams are so important, especially before age five. A pediatric eye doctor can detect amblyopia even in toddlers.
If your child hasn’t had a thorough eye exam recently, don’t wait. Early detection and treatment of amblyopia can preserve a lifetime of healthy vision.
