PARENT QUESTION: Daily habits for healthy eyes throughout summer

PARENT QUESTION: Are Halloween Costume Contact Lenses Safe for My Child?

by | Oct 8, 2026 | Blog

Every October, colorful costume contact lenses pop up in Halloween shops, online stores, and even convenience stores. They promise vampire eyes, cat-slit pupils, or eerie all-black irises. They also promise trouble—especially for children.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology warns that decorative contact lenses sold without a prescription are illegal in the United States and can cause serious eye damage, including corneal ulcers, infections, and even permanent vision loss.

Why Are They Dangerous?

  • No professional fitting. Contact lenses are medical devices that must be properly fitted to your child’s eyes. An ill-fitting lens can scratch the cornea.
  • Non-sterile packaging. Many novelty lenses sold at costume shops are not manufactured to medical-grade standards.
  • Lack of instructions. Children may not know how to insert, remove, or care for the lenses properly, increasing infection risk.
  • Sharing. Kids share everything—including lenses—which spreads bacteria.

Safe Alternatives for Spooky Eyes:

  • Use face paint or theatrical makeup around the eyes (not in them).
  • Choose costumes with masks or glasses that achieve the look without touching the eye.
  • If your teen truly wants colored contacts, visit a licensed eye-care professional for a prescription pair that fits properly and is FDA-approved.

A Halloween eye infection isn’t just painful—it can lead to lasting damage. No costume is worth risking your child’s sight.

Talk to your kids before October 31st. Let them know why those tempting novelty lenses at the costume store are off-limits—and help them find a creative, safe alternative instead.
