PARENT QUESTION: What should I do if my child gets an eye injury?

PARENT QUESTION: Why Does Outdoor Play Matter for My Child’s Vision?

by | Sep 25, 2026 | Blog

Here’s one of the best-kept secrets in children’s eye health: time spent outdoors may actually help protect your child from developing myopia (nearsightedness). And with fall’s cooler temperatures arriving, it’s the perfect season to get outside.

Research has consistently shown that children who spend more time outdoors have a lower risk of becoming nearsighted. Scientists believe exposure to natural light plays a key role, stimulating the release of dopamine in the retina, which helps the eye maintain its proper shape during growth.

How Much Outdoor Time Is Enough?

Experts recommend at least 60 to 90 minutes of outdoor time per day. That doesn’t have to be a single block—recess, an after-school walk, weekend hikes, or playing in the backyard all count.

Easy Ways to Add Outdoor Time This Fall:

  • Walk or bike to school when possible.
  • Move homework outdoors. Reading on the porch still counts as studying.
  • Plan weekend nature activities. Apple picking, leaf collecting, or a family walk through a park are all eye-friendly outings.
  • Enroll in outdoor sports or activities. Soccer, cross-country, or just free play at the playground are all great options.

Of course, outdoor time doesn’t replace the need for regular eye exams—but it’s a powerful, free, and enjoyable addition to your child’s eye-health routine. The combination of less screen time and more natural light is one of the most evidence-backed strategies parents have to reduce myopia risk.

So lace up those sneakers and step outside. Your child’s eyes will thank you.
