If your child spends time on a tablet, computer, or phone—and let’s be honest, most do—then digital eye strain is a real concern. One of the simplest tools to combat it is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
Why It Works:
When children stare at a screen, they blink less frequently and their eye muscles lock into a close-focus position. Over time, this can lead to symptoms like dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and neck or shoulder pain. The 20-20-20 rule gives the eye muscles a chance to relax and reset.
How to Make It Stick:
- Set a timer. Use a kitchen timer, phone alarm, or a kid-friendly app to remind your child to take a break.
- Make it a game. Challenge your child to spot something far away outside a window—a bird, a cloud, or a neighbor’s mailbox.
- Model the behavior. Kids imitate what they see. If you take screen breaks, they will, too.
- Pair it with movement. Encourage your child to stand, stretch, or grab a glass of water during each break.
The American Academy of Ophthalmology notes that children’s increased screen time has been linked to a rise in myopia (nearsightedness). While the 20-20-20 rule alone won’t prevent myopia, it’s one valuable piece of a bigger eye-health puzzle that also includes outdoor play and regular eye exams.
Small habits, practiced consistently, can make a lasting difference. Start the 20-20-20 rule this week and help your child’s eyes go the distance—literally.
