Parent question: Why Is My Child Complaining of Eye Pain and Associated Headaches?

PARENT QUESTION: How do I help reset sleep and screen habits for healthier eyes before fall?

by | Aug 26, 2026 | Blog

By late July, many families notice bedtimes slipping later and screens creeping into more parts of the day.

Excess evening screen time, especially close to the face, can disrupt melatonin, delay sleep, and contribute to tired, uncomfortable eyes. Kids often hold devices very close and forget to blink, which dries the eye’s surface and worsens digital eye strain.

Use August as a “reset month” before school resumes.

Gradually move bedtime earlier by 10–15 minutes every few nights, and establish a firm “no screens” rule for the last hour before bed.

Replace late‑night scrolling with calming routines: reading on paper, quiet play, baths, or family conversations. During the day, encourage regular breaks and plenty of outdoor play, which supports healthy eye development and better sleep.

Aim for consistent limits—many pediatric and public health groups suggest keeping recreational screen time to about two hours per day for school‑age kids, with even less for younger children.

If sleep problems or eye discomfort continue despite good habits, discuss them with your child’s doctor or eye care provider.
