Yes, excessive exposure to sunlight can be harmful to your child's eyes.

PARENT QUESTION: How can I protect my child’s eyes from summer sun and UV damage?

by | Jul 4, 2026 | Blog

As Utah’s summer sun intensifies in May and June, protecting children’s eyes from ultraviolet (UV) radiation becomes critical. Children receive up to three times more annual sun exposure than adults, and as much as 80% of lifetime UV exposure occurs before age 18.

Young eyes are especially vulnerable because their clearer lenses allow more UV light to reach the retina, increasing the risk of cataracts, eye cancers, and skin damage around the eyes later in life.

Parents should look for sunglasses labeled “100% UV protection” or “UV400,” which block 99–100% of UVA and UVB rays.

Choose wraparound styles or larger frames that shield eyes from multiple angles, and opt for impact‑resistant polycarbonate lenses for active kids. A wide‑brimmed hat cuts UV reaching the eyes by about half and pairs perfectly with sunglasses.

Remember that UV rays are present on cloudy days and reflect off water, sand, and pavement, so sun protection is essential anytime your child is outdoors—not just at the pool or beach.

Starting these habits early makes eye protection a natural part of summer fun.
