PARENT QUESTION: What should parents know about pink eye season?

by | Mar 18, 2026 | Blog, News

Late winter and early spring often bring waves of pink eye (conjunctivitis) in schools and daycares.

Pink eye simply means inflammation of the clear membrane over the white of the eye and inside the eyelids, and it can be caused by viruses, bacteria, allergies, or irritants like chlorine.

Viral pink eye usually causes red, watery eyes and may accompany cold symptoms; bacterial cases often have thicker discharge and crusting.

Allergic pink eye tends to be very itchy and often affects both eyes.

Good handwashing, avoiding sharing towels or pillows, and teaching kids not to touch or rub their eyes are key to limiting spread.

Parents should call a doctor urgently if there is significant pain, swelling around the eyelids, vision changes, or if the child seems very ill.

Many viral cases improve with supportive care such as cool compresses and artificial tears, while some bacterial cases do require prescription eye drops. Always follow your child’s own doctor’s advice about school exclusion and return.
