PARENT QUESTION: Are my baby’s eyes developing normally in the first year?

by | Feb 20, 2026 | Blog

Parents often wonder in late winter, “Is my baby’s vision on track?”

During the first year, babies rapidly learn to focus, follow faces, and coordinate both eyes, but it can be hard to judge from home alone.

Even if everything looks normal, the American Optometric Association recommends a comprehensive eye examination around 6–12 months of age to catch problems like significant refractive error, lazy eye, or eye misalignment early.

At home, notice whether your baby makes eye contact, tracks faces or toys, and reaches for objects as they get older.

Occasional eye crossing can be normal in very young infants, but constant crossing, one eye that seems to “wander,” lack of eye contact, or unequal red reflex in photos are red flags that deserve prompt professional attention. A pediatric eye doctor can perform a gentle, age‑appropriate exam and reassure you—or begin treatment—well before vision problems interfere with development.

Scheduling this visit in February or March can also be easier before spring travel and activities pick up.
