Cold weather in January and February often means more indoor time (which usually means more screen use).
While screens are a normal part of today’s learning and entertainment, too much close viewing can cause digital eye strain in children.
Symptoms include dry or tired eyes, headaches, blurred vision and trouble focusing. Encouraging healthy habits can make all the difference.
Make the 20‑20‑20 rule part of your child’s day: every 20 minutes, look at something at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Good lighting, proper posture and breaks away from screens are essential.
Balance screen activities with offline fun like crafts, reading or puzzles. Outdoor play, even in chilly temperatures with proper attire, gives eyes a chance to focus on distant scenery — which may help support healthy vision development.
Also be alert for signs that your child’s eyes are bothering them: squinting, frequent blinking, rubbing eyes, or sitting very close to screens. These can be clues it’s time for an eye check. By mixing active play, breaks and eye‑friendly habits, you can help reduce eye strain and build lifelong vision habits.
